Another Ole Florida Iron Fly Competition

We held our second Iron Fly Competition this past week in our bimonthly Intermediate tying class.  Similar to Iron Chef, the tiers had an 1 3/4 hours to come up with a pattern to submit to be judged.  The secret ingredient was Clear Cure Goo, from our adhesives page.  The CCG comes in 4 varieties: Brushable, Thick, Flexible, & Thin.  The Thick is a great epoxy substitute, the Flexible is more like Softex or Silicone & the Brushable works well for stiffening materials to help from fouling.  All products cure in a few seconds with the CCG Light so you can fish them right away.  The products set up tacky, but lose that with some brush strokes of Hard As Hull or Sally Hansen’s Hard As Nails.  In the case of the flexible, coating with Hard As Nails still retained the soft flexible feel of the CCG without the tackiness.

Everyone voted for their favorite four flies based on quality, originality and use of the secret ingredient  They were not allowed to vote for their own fly.  1st place received 10 points, 2nd 7 points, 3rd 4 points, & 4th 1 point.  Here’s how they finished:

Unentered fly from Owner Darren Selznick:

Tied 4th Runner Up: Dan Glassford

2nd Runner Up: Dave Simpson

1st Runner Up: Joe Herdering
